How To Stop Panic Attacks – Stop Anxiety Attacks the Simple Way
I really believed I was going to die! The most horrible panic attack that I have ever had in my life, struck me while I was driving on a Miami interstate. I was certain that I would crash, and I felt as if there was nothing that could be done to stop it. I was petrified that not only would I die, I would potentially kill others as well by wrecking. By concentrating on the car bumper ahead of me, I made myself go on, until I came to the next exit. I pulled to the curb after finally making it off the freeway. I was having a lot of trouble breathing, and I knew that I was in extreme trouble. I believed that I was experiencing a heart attack, so I grabbed my cell and dialed 911. I had managed to get more calm by the time the paramedics got there.
I felt as if I had lost control of my body, although I was breathing easier. They found not a thing wrong with me, after they did a thorough exam. I felt perfect by the time they were all finished. I was relieved, but also very embarrassed. I was asked by a fireman if I had ever had panic attacks. Since I really didn’t even know what a panic attack was, and because I had never had an attack, I replied, “no”. They advised me to see a doctor as soon as possible, after I told them that my husband was coming to take me home.
My best friend Melissa was called, and she drove my husband to where I was, for him to be able to drive me home. They both wanted to know what happened, and I had a hard time explaining it. I felt like I was crazy.
How To Help Someone Having a Panic Attack
Melissa said that she thought I had experienced a panic attack. I wasn’t aware at the time, but her cousin had been having panic attacks for many years. But at that moment, I just wanted to go home. I talked to Melissa the very next day. Her cousin had been talked to, and she was sent a forwarded newsletter from Joe Barry, a life coach living in New York. He was the one the had helped her to control her anxiety. The newsletter was then forwarded from Melissa to me. It was simply a small list of ways how to stop panic attacks once they had begun. It was extremely interesting, but I wanted my doctor to let me in on the way to handle it. I saw my doctor that Wednesday, and I was told I was in perfect health. I thought for certain that I had heart problems. After discussing the anxiety attack, he felt it right to prescribe Xanax to stop another attack from occurring. He also told me that other prescriptions were available, if Xanax didn’t quite do the trick.
I never liked to use drugs, but felt I had to. I hadn’t had an attack for two weeks after starting the medication, but I was way too tired and irritable to even try to have an attack if I wanted to. I quit taking the medication. I felt I needed to know all I could about panic attacks, so I went to the Internet. The information that was available on how to stop panic attacks was huge, but no one could say for certain why an attack occurred, only how they occurred.
How it happens, is that our subconscious mind that controls the fight or flight instinct we have, goes crazy when we think that there is a perceived threat to our lives. Adrenalin is let loose in large amounts, thus causing the heart attack like symptoms. Because when the danger is really there, the body has to have more blood to send to the muscles, and greater amounts of oxygen so that one can fight or run away from the threat. Although many people think that some kind of stress or trauma earlier in life causes this to happen, nobody knows for sure. In just about any study that has been done, it is said that the fear of having another attack, is much worse than the fear of flying, or anything else. After an attack has happened, it is so terrifying, that you would do anything to avoid another one.
Because of this, your quality of life suffers, causing you to sometimes not drive, or even leave your house, since you want to always feel safe. Being afraid of the attack is what causes the worst damage to life quality. The newsletter stated, that the most effective technique to lower the fear of attack, was to be able to control any attack that happens. When you are aware that you can end the attack pretty much before it starts, you will no longer live in intense fear that another attack will happen. The loop that tells you you will have another attack is broken.
This made a great deal of sense to me. I knew that for real help from panic attacks, my doctor was not going to be the one to give it to me. Although the Internet is full of programs and books on this subject, I decided to go with Joe’s Panic Away, since it had done so well for Melissa’s cousin. You can’t lose anything, since you can get your money back if it doesn’t work for you. Joe, as well as many other top authors, had been long time sufferers of panic attacks. They had tried all of the therapy and medications, before they eventually found a way to stop the fear of a panic attack. Since he knows what it is like, he can write from his own experience, and that is important to me.
The kit is no cure all. The tips that are in the book must be followed, but they do work.
Even being able to talk about my panic attack is huge. Going to the website is easy. Because of my embarrassment over the whole thing, I didn’t want to tell people, because I thought they would think me crazy. My friend Melissa has my thanks for suggesting the book, and Joe has my thanks for writing it.
